Middle Atlas Carpet- Zayan Tribe
Like the Beni Ouarain and Marmoucha rugs, the Zayan rug offers on one side very high wool. Yet, this one, instead of showing stains of all colors, only let us see a single red shade: a result of uneven cut of the carpets, the longest (5 to 8 centimeters) being red, the shortest (1 to 3 centimeters) of various shades (blue, yellow or orange, black and white) forming like a thick undergrowth lying at the foot of tall grass, The carpet's back can be used and presented upside down preferably in the summer so that one can see the motif's details, reveals a relatively extended diamond-shaped network with compartments furnished with a central motif with numerous variants and irregularly distributed. A listel of small diamonds forms the frame, is always the same. It's a pretty remarkable detail for a Middle Atlas carpet: perhaps under the influence of the Rabat carpets, the field is surrounded by a wide framing border inside which it inserts a transition list.
